Author Richard Louv at Hoyt Sherman
Last Child in the Woods
7:00pm
Please note the date of this event has changed. We currently have his books on sale in the store so you may come buy one at any time and bring it to Hoyt Sherman to get signed (skip the line at the event!) We will also be selling his book in the lobby the night of the event. Here is information about the book:
Richard Louv was the first to identify a phenomenon we all knew existed but couldn't quite articulate: nature-deficit disorder. His book "Last Child in the Woods" created a national conversation about the disconnection between children and nature, and his message has galvanized an international movement. Now, three years after its initial publication, we have reached a tipping point, with Leave No Child Inside initiatives adopted in at least 30 regions within 21 states, and in Canada, Holland, Australia, and Great Britain.

Friday, August 8
Author Max Allan Collins (aka Patrick Culhane)
Red Sky in Morning
6:00pm
It's 1943, World War II is well under way, and Ensign Peter Maxwell is enjoying easy days in San Diego as base choir director and warm nights with his new bride, Kay. But there's a war out there waiting to be fought, and Pete wants to be part of it.
When a request comes up for officers on an ammo ship (prophetically named after Pete's Iowa hometown, Liberty Hill), newly promoted Lieutenant Maxwell and the rest of his vocal quartet, the Fantail Four, volunteer. The duty they pull is dangerous even for wartime: the young officers find themselves in charge of a ship of largely untrained African American sailors who hail from big-city ghettoes, Dixie farms, and all ports in between. |
