our mission and our vision

East Village Books is central Iowa's newest independently owned bookstore. But it's a lot more than that! In addition to a huge selection of new release and classic books you’ll also find a dedicated children’s department where parents can teach their kids to love books, fun educational or interactive toys like WebKinz and a large music department with thousands of CDs and box sets from a wide variety of artists. And there is an amazing assortment of original artwork in many media from local and regional artists and a large collection of greeting cards and gift items.

EVB is more than just a book, music and art store.  It’s a destination. We liken it to a cultural gathering place. Featured on the EVB Spotlight Stage you’ll find an amazing variety of appearances and performances. From authors and artists to musicians and speakers, East Village Books presents a continuous schedule of compelling events. Educational programs, book clubs, author readings, film festivals, political speeches, meet-up groups, yadda yadda yadda. You name it – we’re probably offering it.  This is a dynamic and fun place to be so watch our calendar for special events and join in the fun.

our history

East Village Books officially opened it's doors on October 26, 2007 with a book signing from award winning author of In Search of Mockingbird Loretta Ellsworth. Since then the store has been up and running 7 days a week, providing a great selection of books, music, art and gifts to the East Village. In addition, the space has been utilized for author appearances, private business meetings, live music concerts, artist showings, educational programs, children's events, book club meetings, holiday parties, etc. etc. etc.! We are so pleased that the space we designed to be an organic, ever-changing venue has been so embraced by the community. Watch our events calendar to see what's happening next at EVB!

who started EVB?

Owner/Operator Teri Wood TeBockhorst has held the vision for nearly 12 years and has been intently focused on the mission for the past 2 years.  Every aspect of EVB has been a thoughtful and deliberate process from location and inventory to the EVB Spotlight Stage – always keeping the end objective in mind.  Along with her husband Andy, they have worked to provide the community with a destination where patrons can “nurture their souls” through the cultural offerings of books, music and art.

Teri has lived in the Des Moines area for nearly 25 years working in the real estate, advertising, PR and marketing arena  She is an active community volunteer currently serving on the boards of Blank Park Zoo, Better Business Bureau and the John Stoddard Cancer Center.
